How do I use Insurance for Therapy?
Q1: What is a super bill?
A super bill is a detailed receipt or invoice your therapist can provide after a session. It typically includes your name, date of birth, therapist’s details (name, phone, email, Tax ID, NPI), the diagnostic code, service code(s) (CPT code), date of service, and the fee paid. This document is what you submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement.
Q2: Does Hopeful Horizons Counseling accept insurance?
Yes but Hopeful Horizons is an out-of-network provider. That means you pay for therapy directly, and then you may use the super bill to request reimbursement from your insurance. Superbills are auto-generated once-a-month to your client portal but can be made upon request. Reimbursement is not guaranteed; it depends on your plan.
Q3: What should I ask my insurance company before beginning therapy?
When you call your insurance’s member services, ask:
Do I have out-of-network coverage for mental health services (including via telehealth)?
What is my annual deductible and has it been met (or how much remains)?
How many sessions per year are covered?
What reimbursement rate applies to CPT codes like 90834 (45 min) or 90837 (60 min)?
What is my copay (if any)?
Do I need prior authorization? Or a primary care provider referral?
What address is on file for mailing reimbursements/checks?
How and where do I submit the super bill (online portal, mail, fax)? What is the deadline?
Q4: How do I submit my super bill?
There are generally three ways (Mail, Fax, and portal) but, to ensure a quick response and confidentiality is maintained, Online Portal submission is highly recommended.
Q5: What happens after I submit a super bill?
Processing typically takes around 2–4 weeks.
The insurance may reimburse you (often minus any copay or you might apply it to your deductible).
If the super bill is denied, contact your insurance to ask for explanation and next steps.
Are Sessions Too Expensive?
We believe everyone deserves access to quality mental health care, regardless of their financial situation. That’s why we offer reduced rates for clients who schedule an intake session and need financial assistance. During your initial consultation, we’ll discuss your needs and work together to find a rate that makes therapy more accessible and affordable for you.
